BCU Holiday Classic: Morningside vs. Viterbo

The CSN staff will be blogging from this year's Briar Cliff Holiday Classic, presented by Holiday Inn-Downtown. The classic features eight games over a two-day span.

The first game of the classic is a women's contest between the Mustangs of Morningside and the V-Hawks of Viterbo.

The Starters are being announced -- one big development is the absence of Morningside starter Leslie Foral. Foral, a senior, will miss the contest with an injury.

Senior Katie Sponder draws the starting assignment in Foral's absence.

Morningside is turning turnovers into easy layups, with Brittany Williamson convertine twice and Tanaeya Worden once.

Morningside Coach Jamie Sale does a wholesale substitution less than 3 minutes into the game with Shelby Beaudette, MacKenzi Mendlik, Emily Christen, Roni Miller, Laura Nelson.

Subs for Viterbo, Emily Larson and Paige Babiash, the V-Hawks got a jumper to cut the lead to 6-4. Morningside's defense continues to set the tempo of this contest with another forced turnover.

Morningside's Nelson connects from three after an offensive rebound, while the Mustang defense forces another turnovers.

Morningside has forced Viterbo to commit 9 turnovers, but the V-Hawks are staying in the game with its hot shooting, connecting for almost 60 percent so far.

Morningside has pushed the advantage to eight, while Viterbo head coach Bobbi Vandenberg calls her third timeout of the half.

Offensive rebound leads to a Laura Nelson three-pointer to end the half, and Morningisde holds a 35-27 lead at halftime.

Nelson connects on her fourth three-pointer early in the second half as Morningside has run off nine straight points to take an 18-point lead.

Nelson connects again from long range and Morningside continues its scoring run.

Nelson hits her sixth three-pointer and a layup from Beaudette ups the run to 17 straight points. Viterbo has put up a great effort, but is running out of gas as the deeper Morningside team is showing its strength.

Nelson hits her sixth straight three-pointer and seventh of the game, sandwhiched around layups from Beaudette and Worden giving the Mustangs 24 straight points.

Viterbo breaks the scoring ice with a basket from Jocelin Finn at the 9:05 mark, breaking a nearly 8-minute scoring drought.

Morningside coach Jamie Sale has emptied his bench as the Mustangs will improve to 10-6 on the season.

Viterbo's 46 points are the fewest allowed by Morningside this season.
