BCU Holiday Classic: Morningside vs. Bellevue

The second game of the Briar Cliff University Holiday Classic is a men's contest matching the Morningside Mustangs against the Bellevue Bruins.

Tip off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Newman Flanagan Center on the campus of Briar Cliff University.

The game is a rematch from a regular season contest won by Morningside that was played in Bellevue, Neb. in early November.

Bellevue has gotten off to a fast start, going inside to its 6-8 senior post player Antoine Dade.

Morningside is having a hard time on the offensive end, thanks to a pressuring defense from Bellevue.

Much like they did in the first matchup, the Bellevue Bruins has built an early double figure advantage, will have to see if Morningside can get back into it like they did in the first game.

The Mustangs get a quick response with a seven point scoring run, to close within three at 17-14.

Bellevue continues to pound the ball into its post players, with 6-7 Marcos Perez getting the latest basket after he made three free-throws, following a foul on a three-pointer.

Bellevue takes a 31-23 lead into halftime.

A thunderous dunk by Morningside's Eddie Marrs following a steal at halfcourt brought the sparse crowd to its feet.

Bellevue answered with a three-pointer from Ron King while Morningside cut the lead to five on back-to-back layups from Marrs and Carstens, two of the clubs three seniors.

Bellevue has pushed the lead to 12 following a conventional three-point play and a three-pointer while Morningside struggles at the free throw line continue, now 2-for-10 in the game.

An offensive rebound and a three-pointer from Jace Fredenburg pushes the lead to 16, the largest of the game for the Bruins.

Morningside responds with a pair of baskets, cutting the lead to 12 as coach Jim Sykes calls timeout with 13:02 remaining.

Baskets from Garth Hamilton and Mitch Carstens has pulled Morningside within eight at 46-38 as the Mustangs have picked up the defensive pressure and are playing with tremendous energy right now.

A driving layup from Eddie Marrs, returning to the game after a rest on the bench, has pulled Morningside to within four at 48-44 just under 8 minutes left.

Bellevue gets a three-pointer from Fredenburg, then comes out in a 1-2-2 zone defense following a timeout.

A basket from Mitchell Schultze cut the lead back to five before bellevue answers with a three from Josh Vanderslice.

A Carstens basket has the lead back to six and Morningside gets a defensive stop and a basket from Marrs and were down to four at 56-52.

Bellevue hits another three-pointer, this one from Fredenburg, as Morningside has been playing a 2-3 zone defense for most of the second half.

Back to five as Schultze hits a jumper and Sykes takes a timeout with 3:08 to play.

We are set up for a fantastic finish to this game, much like the regular season matchup in which Morningside rallied from a double digit deficit on the road at Bellevue to knock off the Bruins.

Marrs puts in a layup, giving him 15 second half points, as Morningside pulls to 59-56 with 57.8 seconds remaining. Free throws may decide this one and the Mustangs are only 2-for-10 and have not attempted one in a while.

Vanderslice hits a pair of free throws with 42.4 seconds left as the Bruins have converted 14 of 19 from the charity stripe, and the lead grows back to five at 61-56.

Avery Tyler comes up with possible the play of the game, getting a big block off a Marrs shot attempt from the right elbow.

Tyler converts one of two free throws pushing the lead to six.

Morningside stays alive with a three-pointer from Kevin Zoz, and its a three-point game with 15.5 seconds left.

Tyler converts two free throws as Bellevue finishes the game making 17 of its 23 attempts from the foul line.

Morningside misfires on its final three shots, two from long range and fall to the Bellevue Bruins, 64-59.
