BCU Holiday Classic: Briar Cliff vs. Bellevue

It's time for the final game of the Briar Cliff Holiday Classic, presented by the Holiday Inn-Downtown. This showdown will match NAIA No. 10 Briar Cliff against formally-ranked Bellevue. The Chargers are 11-2 overall, while the Bruins are 9-6. Bellevue has won six-straight including a 64-59 victory over Morningside, yesterday.

The Chargers won the tip, but turned it over on their opening possession. Bellevue responded with back to back scores as the Chargers get out of the gates slow again. Yesterday, the Chargers trailed by eight early before posting an 80-53 victory over Mayville State.

An open three by the Bruins puts them up 7-2. BCU's Matt Geelan scores, followed by a three-pointer by Kyle Semprini, knotting the score at 7-7.

Bellevue's coach Shane Paben, who was formally an assistant coach at crosstown Morningside, is a joy to watch and listen to. He is high energy and I like it!

Bellevue scores to even things up at 9-9. A big blow for Briar Cliff as senior starter Michael Dickes has been carried off the floor holding his knee. He was taken back to the training room.

The teams are exchanging points.... 13-13...

Two freshmen in the game for Briar Cliff... John Engler and Michael Collison...joining them is sophomore Ben Sitzmann and juniors Matt Geelan and Chase Vander Feen.

BCU's Matt Geelan hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Chargers a 42-37 lead into the half. Dynamix School of Dance is now doing a halftime routine.

The word from the training room is not good for BCU. Michael Dickes' knee injury appears to be an ACL/MCL season-ending tear. He has willed the Chargers to several victories this season and it will be interesting to see how the Chargers fill that void...looks like Eric Rohe will start in place of Dickes for the second half...

The Chargers can't find an answer for King, who is now 5-6 from three-point land... Chargers are holding onto two-point lead (47-45).... timeout....16:29 left...

Bellevue has regained the lead, 51-47, yet another three for the Bruins... they are 8-14 (57.1 percent) from downtown. Bellevue is shooting 55.9 percent for the game, compared to 47.4 percent for BCU.

Chargers on a 7-1 run, down 59-58.

A well played game thus far with both teams shooting over 50 percent. The Chargers keep pulling it within one and then the Bruins pull away. 65-61 Bellevue.

Chargers already have seven fouls this half... BCU down 68-61... looking for a lift...

Another three for the Bruins (10-18 for the game)....timeout Briar Cliff, down 73-63 with 4:30 left...

Ron King has shined tonight for the Bruins, leading them with 24 points (6-9 from downtown)...Chase Vander Feen has nailed back-to-back threes, lifting the Charger faithful. Bellevue's lead cut to 78-71 with 1:45 to play...

Chargers got a couple looks, but could not convert and were forced to foul and try their luck at sending the Bruins to the line. Richard Marion missed...Vander Feen again drills a three, cutting the margin to four points, 78-74. Timeout with 44.7 seconds remaining...

Chargers steal the ball and Vander Feen misses an uncontested three. The BCU defense is on lock down and Bellevue has to burn another timeout as they can't get the ball in.

Bellevue breaks the press but turns the ball over, Matt Geelan gets a lay-in on the other end... timeout BCU, down 78-76 with 20.1 remaining...

----according to the depth chart Lehi Tonga seems to be first at the quarterback position
6:30- now the full briar cliff football team is out and running through stretches, from my position they do seem like that have a little hop in the step, or it just may be them trying to keep warm in todays cold weather game. The Lights are really starting to shine it kind of reminds me of the high school friday nights that everyone learns to love during their high school years.

6:50 we have about ten minutes until game time. the stands are filling up slowly but for a Thursday night i don't know if there will be a big crowd at all. As i look out at the home stands i would have to guess that the cougars fans out sit the Briar Cliff stands two to one.

6:55- The home team Briar Cliff Chargers have run on to the field followed by Sioux Falls and both teams seem hyped and ready to get this game going. The National Anthem just sung.
